Mother’s Restaurant in the Central Business District is a New Orleans landmark since 1938. Located at the corner of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas Streets, you will often find a line up around the block.
What are these people waiting for?
They are going to line up again once inside to order their meal.
A server hands you a menu as you enter and you better know what you want by time you get to the cashier because they move quickly telling you to find a seat and give your receipt to one of the ladies who will pick up your order and deliver to your table.
It is more of a blue collar cafeteria. Nothing fancy. Just great food that comes super-sized without asking for any upgrades.
They are famous for their Ferdi Debris Sandwich. Read about the history at www.mothersrestaurant.net.
Be sure to order the debris sandwich dressed with cabbage, pickle, mayo, and mustard. ($11 full size; $10 for 2/3 size). This place is really popular, especially among area business trippers, for breakfast (lots of eggs and grits) and lunch (served after 11am), when you can try all the Creole standards.
